GREENLEE COUNTY – There’s a new sheriff in town, but unlike Graham County, Greenlee County will have to wait until the General Election in November to see who it is.
It won’t be incumbent Sheriff Tim Sumner, however, who was beaten in the Republican Primary on Tuesday night by challenger Dale Sloan.
As of election night, with all but about 20 votes from the Blue Precinct accounted for and 101 total early votes dropped off on Election Day to be tabulated, Sloan led Sumner 316 to 267. While that may not seem like a big difference, out of only 653 ballots cast that equates to about an 8 percent lead for Sloan, prompting the Gila Herald to project him as victorious over Sumner. All election results are unofficial until canvassed by the Greenlee County Board of Supervisors.
On the Democrat side, Daniel Medina ran unopposed and received 357 votes.
The two men will be joined by Independent candidate Eric Ellison on the General Election ticket in November.
