Skyward celebration: National Aviation Day highlights Safford’s regional air gateway

SAFFORD — Each year on Aug. 19, National Aviation Day honors the history, innovation, and economic power of human flight. Established in 1939 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to coincide with the birthday of Orville Wright, the day celebrates the pioneering spirit that transformed global transportation—a legacy that continues locally at Safford Regional Airport – 1LT Duane Spalsbury Field (SAD).

Serving as the “Gateway to the Gila Valley,” the facility is the only public airport in Graham County with paved runways. Beyond connecting local aviation enthusiasts to the skies, the airport serves as crucial regional infrastructure supporting air medevac transports, emergency medical flights, law enforcement support, and wildfire suppression operations across Southeastern Arizona.

A WWII Legacy and Local Pioneer

The airport’s history dates back to World War II, when it was initially constructed as an auxiliary military airfield to support pilot training. After the war, the City of Safford took over the facility, and it expanded over decades to serve local charter, general aviation, and emergency service needs.

In 2024, the Safford City Council officially renamed the airport to honor 1LT Duane Spalsbury, a World War II fighter pilot who flew P-51, P-47, and P-38 aircraft during combat in the European theater. ^{After settling in Safford in 1955, Spalsbury became a cornerstone of the local community—serving as the first chairman of Mt. Graham Community Hospital and remaining actively engaged in local aviation for more than 50 years.}

Vital Infrastructure for Graham County

Covering 630 acres three miles northeast of downtown Safford, 1LT Duane Spalsbury Field features two asphalt runways—including its primary 6,006-foot main runway—capable of accommodating a wide range of aircraft, from private single-engine planes to charter and military craft.

Whether serving as a staging point for airborne firefighters during wildland fire season or providing round-the-clock access for medical evacuation helicopters, Safford’s air hub remains a critical community asset honoring the past while serving the region’s future.
