Pedestrian struck and killed crossing Highway 70

GRAHAM COUNTY – A pedestrian was struck and killed while attempting to cross Highway 70 east of Safford early Wednesday evening. 

The collision reportedly occurred in the area of Lois Lane and S. Nelson Drive. The posted speed limit of the highway in that area is 55 MPH.

According to Arizona Department of Public Safety Media Specialist Bart Graves, a passenger vehicle was eastbound on Highway 70 at about 6:37 p.m. when it collided with a pedestrian who ran into the eastbound lane of travel.

The pedestrian has been identified as Steven Fernandez, 89, of Safford.  

Graham County Sheriff P.J. Allred said Fernandez was attempting to catch up to his teenage granddaughter at the time of the incident.
