No Rebuilding Here: Thatcher Opens Season with 33-6 Dominance Over ALA-Ironwood

QUEEN CREEK — Any pre-season speculation that Thatcher High School football might face a rebuilding phase following heavy graduation losses was emphatically put to rest on Thursday night. Opening their 2026 campaign on the road, the Eagles displayed their signature relentless physicality and execution, controlling every phase of the game to secure a 33-6 non-region victory over American Leadership Academy–Ironwood.

Despite entering the year with minimal returning varsity experience on offense and a completely revamped linebacker corps, Thatcher operated with seasoned precision. The Eagles built a commanding 26-0 lead through three quarters and found the end zone five times, proving the program’s standard remains firmly intact.

Balanced Ground Attack Blitzes Warriors Early

Thatcher’s offense exploded in the first half, putting four touchdowns on the scoreboard before halftime courtesy of four different rushers.

• Ethan Hayes set the physical tone early with tough yardage between the tackles.
• Tufden Taylor showcased explosive speed to stretch the field.
• Jax Shupe provided power running on key situational downs.
• Kase Palmer capped off the quarter-by-quarter damage by punching through the front line.

The diverse rushing attack overwhelmed the Warriors’ front seven, allowing Thatcher to control the tempo of the game and work the clock efficiently throughout the evening.

Defense Sets the Tone Up Front

While the offense clicked early, Thatcher’s defensive unit delivered a dominant performance against a significantly larger ALA-Ironwood offensive line. Up front, Grady Lehman, Brig Romney, Vincent Benjarano, Ethan Hayes, and Josh Jones consistently disrupted play in the backfield and limited the Warriors to brief, isolated moments of productivity.

The defense created short fields for the offense all night, snaring three turnovers in the first half alone to deny ALA-Ironwood any opportunity to establish rhythm.

ALA-Ironwood created a few defensive highlights of their own—including a fumble recovery from Anthony Suarez and an interception by Rylon Bradford—while running back Caiden “Pork Chop” Golden fought for hard-earned yardage on the ground. However, Thatcher’s suffocating front five prevented the Warriors from mounting a sustained scoring drive until late in the contest.

With a convincing 1-0 start in the books, Thatcher turns its focus homeward as they prepare to host Apache Junction next week at John Mickelson Field on Friday, Aug. 28, starting at 7 p.m.
