Father shoots dog in head

SAFFORD — A one-year-old boy was treated for facial and head injuries Saturday afternoon following a dog bite incident at a residence on Harvey Avenue, according to an Animal Control Officer report.
An officer responded to Emergency Room #4 at Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center at approximately 12:07 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, after hospital staff reported a pediatric dog bite victim.
Upon arrival, officers interviewed the child’s father, who reported that the incident occurred at the family’s home on Harvey Ave. in Safford. According to the father, his 1-year-old son was playing with the family’s 11-year-old male Heeler when the dog suddenly snapped, biting the child on the face and head.
The child sustained multiple facial and head lacerations along with puncture wounds during the attack.
The father informed responding officers that he shot the dog in the head following the incident. He noted that the animal was previously healthy, showed no prior signs of illness or aggressive behavior, and had not been in contact with other animals or livestock.
