In this edition, we’re thrilled to spotlight Derreck Rivas who works in our Parks Department as a Parks Maintenance Worker. In this position, Derreck plays a key role in keeping the City of Safford looking its best. From maintaining parks, ponds, and public spaces to helping care for the city pool, airport areas, and cemetery, his work touches many areas of our community. Derreck also assists with special projects, irrigation improvements, building the cemetery entrances, developing the new El Paso Neighborhood Park, holiday decorating, and supporting community events. No two days are the same, and his dedication helps keep our city beautiful year-round. Discover how Derreck embodies our company’s values and continues to commit to excellence in their role below.

What initially attracted you to the City of Safford and what motivates you to continue working here?
As a father, the schedule attracted me the most to the City of Safford along with the great benefits we currently receive. What motivates me to stay is having peace of mind and working with a great team and supervisor. Parks supervisor Jay always has the teams back and fellow team members Anthony, Rhett, Randy, Aaron and Frank are all very reliable and easy to work with.

What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is knowing that many of the City of Safford citizens appreciate the hard work and effort we put as a team into our parks and projects.

What is the most interesting thing you are working on right now?
I have begun the process of obtaining my CDL to help more within my parks department.

How do you approach challenges in your role, and what strategies do you use to overcome them?
Easily, the biggest challenge within my role in parks is time management, when there are several projects and areas that need to be completed in the busy months. The best strategy to use is simply asking one of my park’s team members for help, which is never an issue for any of us.
