In this edition, we’re thrilled to spotlight Mesia Curtis, who works in the Police Department as an Administrative Assistant. In this position, Mesia plays a critical role in supporting the department by organizing and maintaining the evidence room, assisting detectives and officers, and helping the public by ensuring property and belongings are properly returned. Her work blends organization, problem-solving, and community support, making her a valuable part of the team. What initially attracted you to the City of Safford and what motivates you to continue working here?
I was initially interested in working for the Police Department because, in my previous job, I worked closely with detectives, officers, and the evidence custodian. That experience sparked my interest in this field. What keeps me motivated is being part of a team that makes a difference in the community and knowing that my role helps support both the department and the public.

What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is working alongside detectives and officers while helping the public regain their property and belongings. I also enjoy using my organizational skills to keep the evidence room running smoothly and efficiently. It’s very rewarding when I’m able to return items to people or their loved ones—it’s one of the ways I feel I can truly help.

What’s the most interesting thing you’re working on right now?
Currently, I’m focused on two projects—accreditation and inventory—which is an exciting opportunity to help make the department the best it can be. I enjoy that no two days are alike—there is always something new to learn or work on.

How do you approach challenges in your role, and what strategies do you use to overcome them?
Since I am a “department of one,” I take ownership of challenges as they arise. Patience and understanding are key—whether I’m working with the public or with employees. I try to stay calm, focused, and solution-oriented so I can handle whatever comes my way.
