What initially attracted you to the City of Safford and what motivates you to continue working here?
What initially attracted me to the City of Safford was its unique combination of small-town charm and big-picture potential. I saw a close-knit community with dedicated leadership and a growing demand for thoughtful financial stewardship. The opportunity to make a tangible impact — where my work could directly support local services, infrastructure, and long-term sustainability — was incredibly compelling. What continues to motivate me is the sense of purpose and connection. In Safford, you’re not just managing numbers; you’re supporting your neighbors, enhancing quality of life, and helping shape the future of a city with deep roots and real potential. The challenges are meaningful, the work is rewarding, and the community spirit makes it all worthwhile.

What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is knowing that the work I do directly contributes to the well-being of the community. Whether it’s making sure the budget supports essential services, planning for long-term infrastructure investments, or ensuring financial transparency and accountability — I take pride in building trust and stability for the residents of Safford. Every day brings new challenges, but also new opportunities to solve problems and support the bigger picture. That sense of purpose and impact is what makes this job truly rewarding.

What’s the most interesting thing you’re working on right now?
Right now, one of the most interesting projects I’m working on is developing a long-term financial sustainability plan for the City. It’s a comprehensive effort that involves forecasting revenue trends, evaluating capital improvement needs, and building strategies to manage future liabilities — all while keeping community priorities at the forefront. It’s challenging, but it’s also exciting because it’s about shaping the financial future of Safford in a way that supports growth, resilience, and quality of life for years to come.

How do you approach challenges in your role, and what strategies do you use to overcome them?
I approach challenges by staying grounded in facts and focused on solutions. In government finance, issues can be complex — from sudden revenue shortfalls to navigating regulatory changes — so I start by gathering accurate data, understanding the full scope of the issue, and identifying who needs to be involved. One key strategy I use is collaboration. Whether it’s working with department heads, outside auditors, or the city manager’s office, bringing the right people to the table helps generate better ideas and more balanced outcomes. I also prioritize clear communication — translating complex financial information into practical options that decision-makers and the public can understand with a little humor.
Most importantly, I try to stay flexible and proactive. Challenges are inevitable, but with thoughtful planning, transparency, and teamwork, they’re also opportunities to build trust and improve systems.

Thank you, Troy, for your hard work, adaptability, and dedication to the City of Safford!
