SAFFORD – Whether it was the carnival barker action of Safford City Council member Michael Andazola Sr., or the push on digital news media, this year’s proceeds for the annual Give From the Heart Hot Dog and nachos sale doubled what was raised last year for a new record.

According to Safford Assistant City Manager Eric Bejarano, the event raised $2,802.66 compared to roughly $1,300 last year. Andazola Sr. was out there for the entire time drumming up business from anyone within earshot of his megaphone.

The event started off with a bang and the city crew went through 250 hotdogs in the first hour alone. City employees and others lined up to purchase the items with proceeds benefitting the most needy – the elderly in need of assistance with their utility bills.

Safford employees served $2 hot dogs and $3 nachos with jalapeños going for 50 cents extra until they couldn’t replenish their supplies any longer. This is the seventh year for the program and it appears it will continue for the future.

“This is a great program for the community helping support our elderly with their utility bills,” Bejarano said.
