Letter to the Editor: Safford gas duopoly gouges residents

Jon Johnson File Photo/Gila Herald: A reader questions gas gouging from the area’s duopoly of Circle K and Speedway (7/11) convience stores.

Dear Editor:

I am just wondering if anyone else in Safford is disturbed by the fact that we have some of the highest fuel prices in the state.  If you go to Tucson or Phoenix and drive around a little bit you can find unleaded 30 cents a gallon cheaper and diesel up to 70 cents a gallon cheaper than it is here.

We just came back from Show Low and Pinetop where unleaded was 30 cents cheaper than it is here and diesel was better than 70 cents cheaper than it is here.  I also wonder why all the fuel stations here in Safford sell fuel at about the same price.  I know nearly all the service stations are owned by the same outfit, but that doesn’t make it right that they can charge whatever they want.

I believe because they are controlling the price of fuel, that is price gouging and I believe that is illegal.  I don’t understand why our political leaders in town have not done anything about it.  Owning most of the service stations in town, which enables you to control the prices, is what our government used to consider a monopoly.  In the past, they were broken up.  I was just wondering.  Thank you,

Rick Jensen – Safford
