This past weekend, the City of Safford proudly held a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the official opening of Owens Family Park, located off 14th Avenue near 20th Street. This new park represents more than just a beautiful addition to our community, it stands as a lasting tribute to a family whose impact on Safford spans generations.
The Owens family has played a significant role in shaping our community. From J.T. Owens, who served as Mayor in the 1920s and was a local business leader, to Oance and Mary Owens, who established Safford Builders Supply, their commitment to Safford runs deep. Marvin and Heavy Owens developed 14 subdivisions and built more than 700 homes in Safford and contributed to the early development of the Mt. Graham Golf Course and the Chamber of Commerce building. They donated land for important community amenities, including walking paths, water retention areas, and cemetery expansion.
Beyond development, the Owens family has consistently invested in people. Their support of youth programs, scouting, and local events reflects a legacy of service, generosity, and community pride that continues today.
Owens Family Park reflects that legacy. It is a place where families will gather, kids will play, and memories will be made for years to come. We are proud to honor a family that has helped make Safford the great place it is today.
