In this edition, we’re thrilled to spotlight George Quintero who works in our Engineering Department as an Engineering Technician. In this position George provides technical expertise and support across City departments, assisting with engineering studies, project planning, and construction oversight to ensure compliance with standards and successful completion of capital improvements. What initially attracted you to the City of Safford and what motivates you to continue working here? Working for the City of Safford has allowed me to achieve an ideal balance between my work and home life. I greatly value the time I spend with my family, as it is very important to me. Additionally, I have the opportunity and time to continue my education and enhance my skills. What motivates me most is witnessing the growth of my coworkers and the City itself. Being part of an organization that helps improve the community where I was born and raised fills me with pride as a city employee.

What is the best part of your job? The best part of my job is being actively involved in the advancement process of the City of Safford’s capital projects, from a conceptual idea, often inspired by the community. This idea then evolves through careful planning and design, where the city engineer and other city associates work to safeguard as many details as possible that align with the community’s vision. Taking part in the construction layout and coordinating with contractors to ensure that the project meets the city’s quality standards. Then, witnessing the completed project come to life and seeing residents interact with and enjoy the new space or product we’ve created is truly rewarding.

What’s the most interesting thing you’re working on right now? The most interesting project I’m currently overseeing is the construction of Owens Family Park. This work involves coordinating both internal construction efforts by city employees and managing the work of various external contractors. Watching this park transform from a barren dirt lot into a community space has been an incredibly rewarding experience.

How do you approach challenges in your role, and what strategies do you use to overcome them? When I encounter challenges, I strive to approach them with a level head. Staying calm enables me to work towards a solution through effective communication, critical thinking, and drawing on the experiences of others. Relying on different perspectives allows for a thorough evaluation of the situation from multiple angles, ultimately leading to quicker and more effective solutions.
