In this edition, we’re thrilled to spotlight Cayden Curtis, who serves as a Mechanic. In this role, Cayden performs skilled mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair duties to maintain the City’s fleet of vehicles and ancillary equipment. His versatility, strong work ethic, and eagerness to learn make him an invaluable member of our team. What initially attracted you to the City of Safford, and what motivates you to continue working here?
I was working on the road most of the time and decided I needed a job closer to home. Around that time, I saw the Mechanic position open. I continue to work here so that I have the ability to spend more time with my family, and the work environment in the shop is great.

What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is that I’m able to work on a wide variety of machines—from chainsaws all the way to dozers in the Landfill.

What’s the most interesting thing you’re working on right now?
The most interesting thing I worked on was when we rebuilt the pumps on two of the Fire Department’s trucks. It was something I had never done before, but we were able to knock it out quickly.

How do you approach challenges in your role, and what strategies do you use to overcome them?
I’ve found that the best way to approach a challenge is with an open mind. In this field, you never know what’s going to come into the shop next, so it’s best to keep learning and adapting to every situation. The biggest advantage I have here in the shop is both of my superiors have more experience than I do, and they’re always willing to share it.
