In this edition, we’re thrilled to spotlight Christopher Crawford who works as an AMI Technician in our Field Services department. In this position, Chris installs and maintains meters that automatically measure utilities. He ensures the data is accurately transmitted to the City’s system for billing. If there are issues with the meters, he troubleshoots and resolves them to keep the system running smoothly. What initially attracted you to the City of Safford and what motivates you to continue working here?
I was drawn to the City during my role as a lead dispatcher with the Graham County Sheriff’s Office. When a family emergency necessitated a job change, I aimed to stay within government work. Fortunately, the City of Safford had an open position at the Landfill. I am currently an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) technician. What motivates me to continue in this role is my family, my fellow employees, and the citizens of Safford. I genuinely love working here.

What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is the freedom to be outside most days and completing my work independently.

What’s the most interesting thing you’re working on right now?
Our AMI department is preparing for a significant ten-year meter replacement project. My fellow techs and I are gearing up by replacing some commercial meters and updating communication equipment on current customers’ meters to ensure a smooth project launch in July.

How do you approach challenges in your role, and what strategies do you use to overcome them?
I approach each challenge with an open mind and a commitment to completing the day’s work. When I need assistance, I can always count on my fellow techs and the management team that supports our departmental goals.
