Each month, we highlight exceptional individuals who exemplify dedication and make the City successful. In this edition, we’re thrilled to spotlight Cameron Atkins who works as our Airport Manager. In this position Cameron Atkins directs all operations of the airport, implements airport policies and procedures, and coordinates grant applications and expenditures with City staff and airport consultants. Discover how Cameron embodies our company’s values and continues to commit to excellence in his role below.What initially attracted you to the City of Safford and what motivates you to continue working here?

I have always enjoyed living in a small town, and Safford checked all of the boxes for me. I can pursue my outdoor hobbies, and I love the environment you get in a small town. I was also very attracted to the idea of being part of a positive change for this community, and getting to shape the airport into the asset I know it can be.

What is the best part of your job?

I often joke that I have the best job in the city, and for me it is. I get to pursue my passion at work. I love aviation, and every day I get to make a positive impact for our pilots and the population of Safford as well. Not only that, but City Council and the City Manager have given me the ability to do my job easily and allowed me to pursue a number of projects that will enhance the airport and its services.

What’s the most interesting thing you’re working on right now?

For the last 2 and a half years, I have been working hard to bring scheduled airline service to Safford. This community has lacked that since the 1970’s and we are very close to making that dream a reality. We just received a large grant from the federal government and are moving forward towards service hopefully starting soon.

How do you approach challenges in your role, and what strategies do you use to overcome them?

The biggest lesson I have learned while working here is that challenging the status quo is not always easy. Doing things the right way, when they have been done differently for years, tends to ruffle some feathers. But often all it takes is an honest conversation to show everyone around you why you are moving in a new direction, and ultimately the results speak for themselves.
